2015 | Day 38

Day Thirty-Eight

Terri came over today and we had a good lunch at Tuscan Cafe.  We talked about all sorts of things and then we came back to my house and watched that short film I recently purchased -- Dragonflies, the Baby Cries (by Jane Gillooly).  Then we talked some more and it was time for Terri to go home.

My sinuses/allergies have been in high gear all day and still are.  I am taking another personal night.  I'm kinda woozy and not feeling too well.  I just can't get into anything tonight and I don't want to force anything...that just isn't very productive.  Hopefully tomorrow will be better.

2015 | Day 37

Day Thirty-Seven

After much trial and error...after many, many chalk on/chalk off attempts -- I think I may have found what the big blue fluffy guy is.  He is definitely not a biteyou...believe me, I tried to make him into one but he just wasn't having it.

I now think he is an updated version of my old character Wolfy.  Although the original Wolfy was absolutely capable (if not actually pretty close to) biting someone, this newer version doesn't seem to need to bite.

This is one of the ceramic tiles I drew Wolfy on...there were several...and most often Wolfy was blue.
I swear -- I get more pastels and chalk on me than on the collage.
Well...here he is.  He needs quite a bit of work because of all of the mess I made on him...plus he has some messed up paper that needs to be fixed.
A longer shot.

2015 | Day 36

Day Thirty-Six

Tonight I added more of the very old, flower pattern tissue-y Japanese paper to the other two middle mountains.  I found some detail in Tower #1 and re-worked Tower #2 and cut a piece of textured paper for it.  I outlined the mountains (4) and towers (2).  I think I will probably need to add more white Unryu paper for the "snow" on the mountains, but not yet.  The big blue fluffy biteyou guy still needs a face...and it is possible it could turn out that he isn't a biteyou after all.

My starting point tonight...the three middle mountains.
Look -- tonight you can actually see the flower patterns (pink, blue, white) on the three middle mountains.
A slightly longer shot.
An even slightly longer shot than that.
Tower #1 showed me some details.
Tower #2 needed a whole new piece of nice textured paper.
That's better.
Can you see the texture/inclusions/pattern?
Tower #1's details inked in.
Overall, it is starting to look a little better.
I am not sure how much detail the towers will get...I don't want to distract too much from the big blue fluffy guy.  I am going to need to give the mountains and towers a little more definition, though.  I think there might also be some pink clouds on the way...maybe.

2015 | Day 35

Day Thirty-Five

Tonight I made tracing paper patterns of the mountains (and towers) behind the big blue fluffly biteyou.  I think I want to try to add thin, transparent papers to pull them out of their background a bit.  I tried using a very old, very tissue-y Japanese paper from an old samples book that has a blue sort of flower pattern on it.  I taped the tissue-y paper to the back of the tracing paper cut out of mountain #3 and cut out the shape as best as I could.  I glued that to the canvas with a glue stick and then I sprayed it with a matte fixative...hoping it wouldn't melt the tissue-y paper.  I wanted to pre-protect it from the matte medium that I will cover all of the paper add-ons with.  I can always change it later if it really turns out badly...but so far, so good.

Tonight's starting point.
The tracing paper cut outs of mountains and towers.
The really old Japanese tissue-y paper with the blue flower pattern.
The tissue-y paper cut out.
How it turned out -- for now.

I tried to take a longer shot of the collage but my camera can't focus on the flower pattern even though I can see it.

2015 | Day 34

Day Thity-Four

Okay -- at some point tonight before I got to bed for real, I will be working on something.  However, at this moment, I am so physically exhausted from wading through knee-high snow (several times this afternoon) I am feeling like I am about to nod off for a bit...but I want to save this space because I WILL post something tonight...but I'm most likely going to fall asleep before midnight and miss my deadline.  So...here...saving this day/time slot.

UPDATE:  The time right now is 4:38 a.m. and I just now woke up.  I slept (in my recliner) straight through until now and I feel like I haven't even been to bed yet. Gosh, I guess I was (and still am) really worn out from that.  Back to bed for a while...geez.

2015 | Day 33

Day Thirty-Three

It may not look like much, but tonight I have been working on defining these three guys so that I can see them better.  I used pastels to make the colors of their clothes deeper -- they probably won't stay like this, but at least I can make them out more.  And the little guy on the left has more of a face now.  Also, the guy in the middle's horn was extended...I like it better now.

I started by cutting out some circles of white paper (after deciding on the size with the circle template) to try to find a better placement for the little guy on the left's eyes.  In the end, I left them where they were but made circles around them.  I also used the left over negative cut outs of the circles to find a mouth shape and placement.  Then I lightly drew on the lines in pencil.

Next I extended the guy in the middle's left-side horn out to where the color really wanted to stop originally.

Then I added a teensy bit of white pastel around the little guy on the left's eyes.

Then I started to deepen the colors of their clothes so I could separate them more when I look at them (for now).

One of the main problems that has kept me from working more on this collage is that it is built on a watercolor that I purchased at a sale.  The watercolor was made on nice watercolor paper and was just barely taped onto a backing board with a mat over it to hold it in place under the heavy glass and metal frame.  The more papers and matte medium that I added, the more warped the entire piece became.  It is hard for my point + shoot camera to show you what I see when I look at it, but it is really warped out of shape.  When it comes time, I am sure that the framers I go to will be able to figure something out.

I hope to get this done in time for an upcoming deadline...fingers crossed, we will see.

2015 | Day 32

Day Thirty-Two

I am taking one more personal day -- I'm not going to complain this yer (in the blog) if I can help it.  All that I managed to get done today was to make my fingers blue with pastels that I added around this guy's eyes.
