365/2013 - Day 134

feeling better...errands and a new collage

Now that all of the Nasonex has worn off I am feeling better than yesterday...I must be sensitive to some ingredient in that medication...man!  Today I grabbed Juana and we went to LIFT to check up on Greeny and leave the new Customer Loyalty cards and the box of randomized artpacks.  From now on whenever you purchase an artpack from Greeny (my Art-o-mat machine) you get your card punched.  When you have collected 5 punches, you get 1 free totally random artpack.  Each artpack has been wrapped in green paper and ribbon and has one of my business cards on it.  The image on the card has nothing whatsoever to do with the artpack -- it is just a way for people to check out my blog or contact me if they have any questions about Greeny or Art-o-mat.

Then Juana and I went out to lunch but we had to order and eat quickly because the restaurant we went to closes between lunch and dinner and we only had 15 minutes...LOL.  It was fun.  We usually bring half of our meal home anyway.

Juana also gave me her artwork for "West of Center" in case she is not in town for the drop off day at the Northville Art House.  I was thinking about it tonight and I feel really honored for her to trust that nothing will happen to her piece while I have it...it is an incredible assemblage piece that looks like it is pretty delicate but it is also very powerful.  GREAT work -- I can't wait for this show!!!

Okay -- I decided tonight to collage over a little exercise painting we did in an acrylic class at the Northville Art House with Julie Woodard.  I had a good time in the class (Carla and Ruth and Sue took it, too) and we both got acquainted with acrylic paint and techniques...it was a lot of fun...but I am tired of looking at this particular piece.  (I am keeping my other two.)

my painting
the papers I snatched pieces of for this collage -- (no polka dots this time)
this wonderful wood patterned paper came in the box that my painting by Claudia Roulier was shipped in
the first piece of paper goes on...lots of matte medium
several pieces of paper later -- I love how you can see through the papers and glimpse other ones and parts of the painting
I'm not sure what this paper is made of, but when it becomes wet with matte medium it looks like horsehair and strands of straw or weeds or something -- I've had it a long time but never used it before
and here it is...very very wet
I wonder what images/creatures will emerge when it is dry

365/2013 - Day 128

trying something new

I've decided to try something new with my Art-o-mat machine at LIFT in Royal Oak.  I've had some of those "customer loyalty" cards made -- you know, the buy X/get X free cards.

I'm making this as simple as possible...when you buy an artpack from Greeny you will get your card punched by the great folks at LIFT.  When you collect five punches on your card, you get to choose one random artpack for free.  No expiration, no time limit, no limit to how many times you can fill a card and receive a free artpack.

Tonight I am wrapping up great artpacks from my "one-sy/two-sy" box...the artpacks that remain in the columns when they don't sell down all the way.  This is great art from series that I either haven't re-ordered more of yet (or can't because it was a limited series) or that Artists in Cellophane was just out of when I placed an order.  I'm wrapping them up so that there is no peeking -- I hope local Arto-fans will like the promotion!

365/2013 - Day 121

BUSY day!

I recently decided it was time for me to downsize a little with my hosting of Art-o-mat machines.  Buckety is going back to Clark Whittington/Artists in Cellophane and I am keeping Greeny (my "baby", my first machine).  Greeny was a great "fit" at the Northville Art House and I loved having him close by -- I truly appreciate the Art House's support and thank them for being a wonderful and fun location.  On the other hand, LIFT Designer Toys and Gallery in Royal Oak (where Buckety was) is a higher traffic venue.  If I am only going to host one machine, it really ought to be where a lot of people will use it -- and that is LIFT.  And for LIFT, it is like they are getting a "new" machine.  The really really cool thing about the machine being at LIFT is that being a designer toy store, LIFT's customers are already aware and comfortable with the blind box concept.  In the simplest terms, Art-o-mat is pretty much a blind box art vending machine.

So...

With the indescribably fabulous help of my friend Joshua (who is now a major wiz at moving my machines) we packed up Greeny for the ride to Royal Oak.

I rented an appliance dolly and some moving pads -- these pads are really great -- soft padded wool, not the scratchy quilted ones.  I made Joshua use extra padding and bungee cords for my baby Greeny.
Joshua tightening the straps on the dolly.
Aww...Carla...you can visit Greeny at LIFT.
Joshua secures Greeny in the bed of his truck...NO rolling around!
Greeny fully stocked at LIFT
Greeny is two columns smaller than Buckety -- he looks so small in comparison.
I was in a bit of a rush to empty Buckety and fill up Greeny so that Joshua could pack up Buckety and get him secured into his truck...I didn't get a chance to take any emptying-of-Buckety pictures.  We also needed to get back across town in time to beat heavy traffic (the highway was actually already a parking lot when we got on...we bounced back off at the first exit) and I needed to return the appliance dolly and moving pads before the rental placed closed for the evening.  We made it just in time -- whew!

Here is what is currently in Greeny at LIFT:

Sherry Paylor -- dog collages
Sue Clancy & Judy Sullens -- handcrafted books
Kelli Busch -- bicycle chain keychain
Took Gallagher -- Tookies finger puppets
Francine Hibiscus Rossi -- raku tiles
Maija Peeples-Bright -- fanciful, colorful animal paintings
Juana Moore -- Doll Party! paintings
Took Gallagher & William Hessian -- Penciled In colored pencil drawings
Ellen Miffitt -- sumi-e cats

I am getting all fired up about being more active with my Art-o-mat machine again...thinking of in-store promotions, etc.  I also want/need to go back into production on some of my Arto-series and I have lots of ideas for new prototypes.

While Joshua and I were at LIFT there was a young woman customer talking with Ben and she was happy to see Greeny -- she was saying she hadn't seen an Art-o-mat machine in a while (I believe I heard her say she was from San Francisco...or that was the last place she saw a machine) but she knew what Art-o-mat was and she was going to come back in when the machine was fully stocked (I was still filling Greeny at that point and we were moving Buckety) and check it out!  And Ben is interested in making a prototype -- YAY -- we need more Michigan artists in the Artists in Cellophane project!!!

2012/365 - Day 6

Northville Art House stuff

Today I needed to restock Greeny -- my Art-o-mat machine -- at Northville Art House.

Here is what I loaded into the machine today:

Origami
Wooden Cows
Repurposed Tiles
Mixed Media Animal Houses
3-D Animal Sculptures
Raku Tiles
and 3 very different styles of Painting

Greeny looks so good in this spot in the Art House's Store.

And look -- there is Miranda...she just adores the Art-o-mat!

Wow -- right next to the Art-o-mat is a display case FULL of some of Topher Crowder's work! How cool is that?

And just by chance...Miranda's dad Jeff is the organizer of Topher Crowder's solo show which opened tonight at the Northville Art House.

And oh my -- there's Topher Crowder!

I am going to go back again tomorrow when it is a bit less crowded so I can really take in all of the wondrous artwork.

365 Day 188

another moving day for Greeny

Today was a bittersweet day. With the closing of the most wonderful coffeehouse in the world -- Solid Grounds -- "Greeny", my first Art-o-mat machine was on the move again. We had a fabulous run at Teresa Madden's shop and Northville will not be the same without our beloved hangout. However, Teresa has a lot of offers and opportunities and is very excited about the future. She will also be a participant/volunteer at all kinds of things in town.

So we made the move...one block south and one block west...to the Northville Art House.

Joan Potter Thomas and Carla Morabito were on hand to welcome Greeny to his new(est) home. Another perfect fit!

Because I do not have my own storefront or business location, my machine(s) are considered Community Machines. They are subcontracted to locations and the length of stays varies.

I look forward to activities at the Northville Art House and the possibility of having "how to make your prototype" sort of sessions in the classroom area downstairs. That is actually where we first thought we'd have to put Greeny because he takes up valuable floor space and has certain requirments. But Joan and Carla found the greatest spot for him in the Art House Gift Shop!

We signed the paperwork, Joan and Carla chose the art for the first fill up of the machine and they had a quick walk-through of how to operate the machine. Because the Art House is a non-profit organization, a portion of the proceeds from the sale of each artpack sold in that machine will be donated to the Art House.

We are all very excited and happy for the placement of the Art-o-mat in the gift shop at the Northville Art House and look forward to our new partnership!

More photos from the move:

here comes Greeny

t style="font-style: italic;">will the machine fit through the door???

Josh is SO great at moving the machines now...no problem -
just turn the machine sideways!

ooh -- a place to securely lean the front panel while I work on the machine!

all set up and ready to plug in!

LOL -- Carla's desk...many samples of Art-o-mat artpacks were opened...looks like xmas/birthday time!
