2012/365 - Day 143

a great day with two great friends

Today Ruth and Juana and I spent most of the day together and had such a blast!

First we went to lunch at Cass Cafe...mmmmmm....calamari!  Then we stopped at Curl Up and Dye to say hi to Andi but this was one of her Tuesdays off.

Next we went to Grosse Pointe Art Center to see Juana's self portrait in the Faces/Portraits exhibit.  Here are a few photos -- you can see all of the ones I took in my Facebook album here.  There are several exhibits running at the same time at GPAC.  A kids' art show, the main Faces/Portraits show, a couple of others and also a beautiful grouping from a workshop that was held at Detroit's Capuchin Soup Kitchen.

"During the months of February, March and April a 10-week art workshop was taught at the Capuchin Soup Kitchen.

This workshop was set up to soften the harsh and often depressing winter for those in difficult circumstances and give them an opportunity to experience the healing potential of art-making.  For some of the participants, this was their first ever experience exploring any form of art.  They were able to experiment freely with materials like acrylics, graphite and printing techniques."

The artist whose art I especially loved was Joann Anthony.  I wanted to buy several of her pieces but they were already sold.  I did manage to snatch up two gorgeous unframed pieces.

After GPAC it was time for a couple of errands (for me, of course).  First we went to LIFT in Royal Oak to change some of the art in the Art-o-mat machine.  While we were there I grabbed a Friends With You/Hello Kitty dangly thing and a really adorable squishy fox thing for my sister Sue who loves foxes and who will be driving me back to Muskegon next week.

This guy was on the sidewalk outside of LIFT.

Next we made my second errand to get cat stuff at Napier's in Birmingham.  After that I made us stop for a coffee-to-go and then we went to Treat Dreams for ice cream for Juana and Ruth.  I am not an ice cream lover so I at least needed to have the coffee...I got a chocolate chip cookie but it was way too sweet...good, but sweet.

While we were sitting at Treat Dreams and talking and laughing and sharing stories I suddenly realized how late it was and that we still had to get back across town to Northville to drop off art for West of Center!  Man -- we made it just in time!

After that Ruth and I went to Deadwood Grill for dinner...I really wanted their buffaloaf.  Ruth had one of the day's specials -- pot roast and vegetables.  Yummmmm-eeeee!

What a great day with great friends!

2012/365 - Day 70

a few photos from Where the Wild Things Art

Here are a few photos of how my two pieces are displayed in the show Where the Wild Things Art at the Grosse Pointe Art Center. There is a link to more photos of the show towards the bottom of this post.

And now for the art I purchased at the show:

I was able to bring this giraffe home because he was on display in the gift shop area. There is another giraffe in the show...this was my favorite.

There is a kids' art show with the same theme that is also a part of this show. All of the kids' art is for sale by donation, with a suggested starting price of $5 each. The proceeds from the sales of the kids' art is divided between three Grosse Pointe non-profits: the art center, the library and an animal rescue. These are the pieces I bought.

This guy is made of felt. His whereabouts (and also one other of the dyed pieces) are currently unknown. I think I may have dropped them in Ruth's car.

The tiger guy is on a canvas and the other guy is on a canvas board.

I LOVE these pieces!!!

You can see all of the photos I took here.

And in other news...
I still don't know if my submissions to the upcoming Detroit Artists Market show were accepted. I got an email today saying:

"Greetings Artists -- Wanted to let you know the juror has selected the work for the Biannual All Media Exhibition 2012 and the results were mailed today, Saturday. So you should be getting word by mid-week in the mail. Please do not call the gallery for results. Thanks again for your entry and good luck."

Oh well...I guess I will still have to keep my fingers crossed for a bit longer.

2012/365 - Day 69

today is a big art day for me

Two big art things are happening today. First, "Where the Wild Things Art" opens at the Grosse Pointe Art Center tonight. I have two pieces in the show. Second, I will learn if the two pieces I submitted to "The Biannual All Media Exhibition 2012" at the Detroit Artists Market made the cut.

"Where the Wild Things Art"

The Grosse Pointe Art Center

16900 Kercheval
Grosse Pointe, MI 48230
(313) 821-1848

Open Wednesday - Saturday noon - 6:00 p.m.
The show runs from March 9 - April 4.

There will be a lecture by the show's juror -- Mary Fortuna -- on Saturday, March 10, from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m.

If you are local, I hope you can make it out to see the show sometime during its run!

Here are my two submissions for the show on the day I dropped them off (with my friend Peggy).

This guy's title is "He Dreams He is a Tree".

I love him.

I am surprised I can't recall how tall he is...approximately 11" or so...maybe a bit taller. He is table/desk/shelf sized.

He has about a million colors in him, but he is mostly shades of browns and greens. He is a forest dweller and is as tall as a tree...in "real" life.

I love his tail.

I am very happy with the way his hands and arms turned out.

I also love his sweet face and beard.

And this is the second piece I submitted.

It was my first repurposed canvas...aka canvas #1.

The title is "He Says He Knows Two Ghosts" and he is a monster in a wolf outfit, flanked by two ghosts.

I am very pleased with how this turned out, too.

The ghost on the left.

The ghost on the right.

The monster in the middle.

No doubt I will take lots of photos at the opening tonight, but I wanted to post this now so I wouldn't have to sweat it to get back home tonight and post the photos before my daily midnight blog entry deadline.

And fingers crossed one or both of my pieces get accepted for the DAM show.

2012/365 - Day 60

a friends-filled day

This morning was a brief version of Wednesday Morning at Joan's.

This is the lovely Scout looking out the window.

Leann is working on a sewing project and Joan was finishing up some paperwork.

Leann put the hardware on my framed piece for one of my submissions to the "Where the Wild Things Art" show in Grosse Pointe.

Then Peggy came by and she and I went to Grosse Pointe Art Center to drop off our submissions for the above mentioned show. This show wanted the actual work(s) for jurying instead of a cd of jpegs.

My two pieces are at the left, farthest away...in the black frame and the little guy in front of it.

Then Peggy and I went to drop off submission cds at Detroit Artists Market for their Biannual All Media Exhibit. We also took Carla's cd so she didn't have to mail it.

Fingers crossed that we all get out stuffs in!

Then we went to the Lawrence Street Gallery to see a friend of Peggy's show...and then we had a quick lunch and coffee at Tuscan Cafe.

What a good day so far!

Yesterday Leann helped me collect the Cat-Creature and other art from the Northville Art House. I took these photos last night but didn't feel like blogging about it.

I like the "hands up" of the Cat-Creature and the Jeff Hughart painting behind her. I purchased my wonderful painting from Jeff's Etsy shop. I LOVE it!

I was a little worried to see how Twink would react to the Cat-Creature when he was face-to-face with it.

Twink often watched me through the glass in my studio door while I was working on the Cat-Creature.

Twink has been pretty good with the other larger papier mache animals in the house and also with Chime Cat. I was just a little concerned he'd try to climb the Cat-Creature as if it was a piece of cat furniture. I was careful not to place it anywhere near a spot where he could launch himself to or from.

So far he has been pretty unimpressed. Thank goodness.

I think I am going to spend some time with Twink now and slow down a bit.

Later on I will see what is the next upcoming deadline and what I need to get back to work on.
