2015 | Day 3

Day Three

It started early this morning, before I was even out of bed.  I started thinking about the plaster cloth rabbit guy.  I was thinking about fixing his eyes...he isn't all that far from done, contstruction-wise, but I have been putting off working on him.  This morning I started to get ideas.

I did a lot of listening and thinking today.  I looked at a lot of tutorials about sculpting eyes and about air dry clay and about setting in glass eyes.  I really thought at one point late this evening that I would be using the air dry clay...but not yet.  I feel like this is still too large of an area and I am too unfamiliar with the material.  Whatever...the main thing I needed to do tonight was remove those eyes so I can start over with them...they (or at least one of them) is not "aimed" right.

I brought the plaster cloth rabbit guy into Studio A tonight because the lighting is better in here.  Daytime is okay in the other studio.
His eyes are just not "aimed" right.  One might be able to stay...not sure.
My tools for the job.
Lots and lots of wetting of the area to soften up the plaster cloth -- then the very careful digging begins.
Hey -- this stuff pulls right off.   (sometimes)
...a bit more...
...now the other eye...
...more digging and pulling and...
...HA!  I won!  (I think I will try to match the removed eye to the eye that is still in place...I think.)

I have also been holding my breath and "painting" on the tree trunks in the mostly red collage.  I could not even begin to figure out what the lighter color was blended with so I half-started over.  I am not terribly sure this is how they will end up, but I am done with painting for tonight.  Not too bad considering...this is going to take a long, long time.  But that is okay since this collage has been sitting untouched for a couple of years.

The area "before".
Trying to figure out the colors...then just starting over.
Not too bad...for now...but definitely not done.

365/2013 - Day 64 part two

a little plaster surgery...

I like this snakey guy but he needs some work.

He was just too unwieldy in that state...he had to be propped up in order to stay upright because his head and his tail were both pointing up off of the table.  He was about five and a half feet long at this point.

I knew I needed/wanted to cut a couple of sections out of him so that his face would be easier to look at and so that he could "stand" on his own.

I cut his head off, cut the bend of his tail off, then I needed to trim off another small section where his head attached to the body and also another small chunk of the tail curve.  The result is that I have a shorter, cuter snake and two leftover sections that I can probably use with another snake later on.

his "before" photo with the two sections taped in place
I think he has the look of a baby snake now
yay -- surgery was a success!

2012/365 - Day 31

"you're improving. let's put it like that."

Okay -- I would hardly say this guy is cuddly, but he is a little less "Mr. Creeping Me Out" than he was.

Mr. Creeping Me Out

going under plaster surgery...

The eyes need to be re-done, that's for sure. They are too tiny and the face is getting built out too far for them.

I am not very fond of him from straight on (yet)...needs a LOT of thinking/work.

Not wholly horrible from the side.

He will get better eventually.

365 Day 365

this just might be it!

Back to the plaster surgery on the cat-creature's face late this morning/early afternoon. I think it just might be the final face.

I think I like this face.

I still need to touch up the ears and the back of the cat-creature's head (they are a mess on the back). That will probably happen later today and into this evening.

I need to put a smoothing layer on the middle of the cat's body down to where the first tier of the tomato cage starts -- for structure and strength.
That part will probably wait until tomorrow.

Squeeeee -- we're getting there!

365 Day 364 -- part two

it's coming along

I did a little more plaster surgery on the cat-creature's face. It is beginning to look more like a cat.

before

I can see now why my sister thought it also looked like a bear.

after

It is improving...not done yet, but looking better to me.

The plaster cloth eyes can stay.
