Then when I started back up it was hit or miss and then a countdown to my solo show and now I don't know how I want to finish out the year with the blog. I am obviously not posting daily, so there is no real consistency. Ah well...for now.

This afternoon I placed a couple of orders for replacement supplies since my show has been extended through the end of January and folks who purchase work in December can pick it up at the end of December and I will need to make more work to fill in the empty spaces. Wow...what a run on sentence!

Tonight I have been sorting the paper stash into general piles/layers and when the new papers arrive I will sort the general piles down to colors. In the meantime here is what the process looked like. I love all of my papers!
I still canNOT believe that my art is filling up the Village Theater at Cherry Hill. Here are a few sneak peek photos (deliberately not showing much details). Opening Reception is tomorrow! I plan on taking lots of photos at the reception so I can make one of those little Blurb books as a keepsake.
But other than that, I am finished with the 2-D work for my show.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Everything 2-D ( and most of the 3-D) has a title and a price...another wa-hooooo!
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I am very ready for a little bit of television and then sleep. I should be able to get all of the sewing done tomorrow.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Whew!Tookhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14732091348538018900noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2828851263207999499.post-66120770983368619012015-11-27T21:47:00.000-05:002015-11-27T21:47:31.312-05:00November 27 -- the collaboration is completeWow -- I didn't realize that it has been several days since I posted to the blog. I have been working long days and everything has blurred together. Today I started (no kidding) at 6 am and Peggy (who arrived at noon) just left -- it is now 9:30 pm. But the collaboration is complete! Peggy finished up all of the work on the plaster cloth cat girl and also did the outlining for me on several collages. I can outline with a Micron pen, but when it comes to doing outlining with a paintbrush I am awful. I gave it my best shot before pleading with Peggy to fix what I'd messed up and do the others. Peggy was great about it, not a problem. I so appreciate it!

Here are a couple of photos of Peggy at work (but the photos are very closely cropped so that you can't see too much of the work before the show opens.)

I am going to take a very overdue break...feed the cats, make dinner, watch some tv. Hopefully I can start sewing tonight.

At the next stage Peggy needed me to clean the old matte medium of of the cat girl's eyes.

Now Peggy could work on the cat girl face-to-face.

Because my pen wasn't really working out very well (ink was beading up on the surface of the collage) Peggy also painted the outline around the crown on my self portrait of me as one of my guys.

I worked on a lot of the other collages today, as well as putting several base layers of paint on the two former horses.
I haven't officially gone to bed yet, so it is still Monday to me and this is Monday's blog post.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">My friend Peggy Kerwan (who I will always think of as "The Cavalry" from now on) did indeed come to my rescue. This is one of the small great things I mentioned in the last post. Peggy and I are collaborating on the painting of the plaster cloth cat girl. I honestly exhausted every idea I had for painting/papering the cat girl on my own. I took a chance and asked Peggy if she was available and if she was interested. She said "it sounds like fun" but to me it is nothing short of the only way the cat girl was going to be able to be a part of my upcoming show. Thank You SO much, Peggy! Here are a couple of sneak peeks:
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">We discussed what I have in mind and with many of my inspiration source books Peggy was off and running. I am giving her a freehand to interpret the animals and ideas I would like to see and I think this is going to be incredible. It is just blocked in right now and it is already magical.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I started to block in some characters on my own on three canvases, including the White Rabbit. These three characters were from tiles I made back when we were going to ceramics in Southfield. They seem so odd to me in such a large format and on canvas, it is taking me a bit to get used to them and to the inclusions in the paper being an element of the overall pieces. (man, what an awkward sentence but I am too worn out to try to reword it...ha.) I noticed the White Rabbit's white paint shows up in the half-dark so I took a quick shot.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Peggy will be back on Tuesday after I get back from a doctor's appointment. I am looking forward to seeing all of this unfold! Tookhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14732091348538018900noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2828851263207999499.post-30386347989439773882015-11-23T00:00:00.001-05:002015-11-23T00:00:46.604-05:00November 22 -- still hereI didn't ever go to bed on Saturday night, I stayed up working until a quarter to six. Same will happen for tonight's post...I will have to update it on Monday -- but I AM here, I am just more concerned with working than with posting at the moment.Tookhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14732091348538018900noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2828851263207999499.post-80527529015320790182015-11-22T00:30:00.003-05:002015-11-22T00:30:50.099-05:00November 21 -- not even close to the deadline tonight -- gah!I had a small series of great little things happen this evening and then I got on a roll and lost track of time. I don't know if I will make it back to complete this post before I go to bed, but I am checking in. I have been working hard all day and night. I am going to take a short break and then back to it.Tookhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14732091348538018900noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2828851263207999499.post-47685735608592000682015-11-21T00:10:00.004-05:002015-11-21T01:42:32.129-05:00November 20 -- oh shoot, I missed my midnight deadline by 9 minutes...I worked on a lot of the collages today and I have finally got all 11 remaining collages started and in several stages of done-ness. Three of the collages were started by using the overhead projector to transfer images onto the canvases. Here is one of them...it is a picture of me as a monster/guy.

Today I also picked up Forest Horses from the framer. I know I said no sneak peeks, but I am really happy with the way this turned out...even the (faux) floating frame looks good to me. This is the collage from a few days ago that I felt guided to do...the "very wet" one using the marbled paper in a collage for the first time. Honestly, this is so unlike me and not something I would be able to sit down and draw...but I love it a lot...the colors in person are very intense. It is called Forest Horses because the green marbled paper's color is Forest and so is one of the shades of green Unryu paper.

And -- ta daaaa -- we got my very bare bones website up and running today! Here is a link for it! And this is all I can do for tonight.
Even the computer is out here so that my helper can have more room to work and so that when she has a question I am in the same room. She is putting together a bare bones website for me. It will have not a whole lot of content right now but I wanted to get it up before my show opens...just for easier access by various people. Hopefully we will be able to publish on Saturday! I am learning some very basic stuff so that I can add photos or edit copy on my own...not too much different than doing a blog post, but not exactly the same process -- I should be able to pick it up after a few days.

The overhead projector is on this end of the room, too. I want to try to project a couple of my older hand drawn images onto a canvas and work a collage around that. I am not sure I can pull that off, but we'll see.

All the way down at the other end of the room I am using the wall as an easel and painting directly onto the canvas as it hangs in its drying space. This is that darker base paper square canvas that I finally found some creatures in and a theme for yesterday. Trying to get the images to come forward away from the dark paper is a challenge for me...but I am getting there. So far it looks like the transparent water colors might do the trick. I think it will look pretty cool if it works out.

A couple of other collages are getting papered in two other spaces on the long tables. No photos of the actual work until the show is hung (if I can get some pictures that day) or until the opening reception after I get back home.

I don't know where I think I am going to get the time to finish all of this work but I am sure giving it my all.Tookhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14732091348538018900noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2828851263207999499.post-87048298855239265732015-11-18T23:17:00.000-05:002015-11-18T23:19:43.574-05:00November 18 - stuff is coming together today!<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Several things really started to fall into place today. Andi helped me by sewing the straps to hold that one collage to a board. I explained to Andi what it was I was trying to accomplish and she did all the measuring and ironing and pattern making and sewing. I will add the grommets later (maybe tomorrow) -- I am wearing out already for tonight.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I had to take photos after I outlined the creatures so I could find them again later...good luck trying to spot them -- I almost couldn't find them again already. I have no clue yet how I am going to work on this collage yet in order for viewers to see the creatures.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I also brought two other collages to near-done-ness...I had to trace and cut out small pieces to fit into spots on creatures in both collages. I try to tear paper as often as I can vs cutting it because the edges fade into the collage better, but some of these pieces I cut today needed to be cut and it won't matter that they have straight edges in the end. I never thought I'd ever be making a postcard for my own show...still not quite believing this is happening.
I am very pleased with them. I think I made the right choices for the papers on both of them. They certainly look more "finished" now.

I cut out a lot of individual pieces of paper to build up a few of the characters in several collages. I found a main image in the green papered collage. I think I know better now what to do with the big papered collage and the square one -- they will be ones I will project images on and either paint or draw or something...now that I can print with my computer again. No photos until I can take a detail shot (but not show the complete collage).

AND...I started sewing the "newfangled" spikes on the large hand sewn guy. I also started his nose so it doesn't look like a beak anymore...still a long, long way to go on this guy...but I am starting to "see" him more plainly. I took his tacked-on head off of his body so I can work with it more easily.

And I think I may have come up with a short artist statement...maybe.Tookhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14732091348538018900noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2828851263207999499.post-78780604392207715162015-11-15T22:36:00.000-05:002015-11-15T22:41:49.513-05:00November 15 -- back to the blog<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">My computer conked out on me last week...I just got it back today. Graphics card or something.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I have been working like crazy to get stuff closer to finished for my upcoming show. And I made the postcards for the show (which are due to arrive tomorrow). And I was waiting on a couple of different art supplies orders to arrive -- and they all did.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I know I said I wasn't going to make any more antler/horns (little ones anyway) for a long time but I was feeling pretty stuck on the plaster cloth guys and I saw this branch when I was coming in from outside a few days ago so I used it for a sort of a headpiece for one of the former horses...kinda like a Las Vegas showgirl...but not really. I also gave him bigger ears.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tonight I papered both of the bases I needed to do. One for Baby Beast and one for He Dreams He is a Tree. Both are very wet in the photos but I think they will look pretty good when they are dry. Both guys go flush to the base so you won't see any of the wooden dowels and that is why I only papered up the dowels as far as I did...plus, I didn't want to interfere with the fit of the legs onto the dowels...a little too much paper and matte medium make a big difference.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I am so behind on the hand sewing it isn't even funny, but I need to get the things that require drying time done first. I saw these weird gloves at the grocery store of all places and they were 10 pairs for $10 so I grabbed up 10 pairs. I think I want to add them to the larger guy as a mane or something. Maybe I will mix in some of the "regular" spikes...dunno yet. I would really like to do some sewing tonight but I probably won't get to it...I am in a super amount of pain today and tonight and I just don't think I am going to go back to work tonight once I have taken this last break. I feel sort of okay until I sit for a bit and then it all starts taking over.
I got some incredibly great preliminary news and it comes as a huge relief, I am so grateful...I can start to breathe a little...feels so good.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">A lot of the morning was spent taking photos of new work...I think I mentioned I got myself a new tripod since I seem to have given my old one away somewhere between here and the move from Southfield (several years ago now). I have to make postcards and I want to do some Moo business cards while I am at it so that means going through a lot of photos and making sure they fit specs, etc.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I am also trying to polish and finish my artist statement. We will be working on my website for some minimal content, including the "about" page on Tuesday -- probably most of the day. I really dislike writing -- especially about myself. It is right up there with painting/applying paint on my rather-not-do-this list. But it has to be done and I will get it done in time.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">But I will say that the "very wet" collage looked great with yesterday's additions. I just had to re-do the eye on one of the creatures. This collage is looking pretty darn nice. I wish the frame I have for it didn't cover as much of the edge of the collage as it does, but that is my only complaint about that. No photos.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I worked on another small collage and after the success with the "very wet" collage I used some small amounts of marbled paper on it. The marbled paper is two-sided and I can grab some colors I don't have otherwise if I turn the marbling side over...comes in really handy! Here is a peak at what I mean.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The collage is underneath the papers -- it is a little girly monster...you can barely see the left edge of the collage showing her ear and part of her eye...and the gorgeous marbled papers.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Oh -- and my wonderful nextdoor neighbor took the wood and dowels for the two bases I needed to put together for He Dreams<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> and Baby Beast. He took the parts to work with <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Him because <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">He had access to all sorts of tools last night. Today <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">She called me and said the bases were ready. I love my new-ish neighbors. I figured out how I wanted the bases for these guys and went out and got the parts cut and the long screws that wouldn't split the wood but I was struggling with the pilot holes...I needed a drill press -- or better yet -- someone to do it for me who knew what they were doing.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

Sometimes it comes down to me needing to stop fighting the emotion(s) and just surrendering and riding it out then getting back on track...and that is all I want to say about yesterday.

Okay -- this morning I took a look at the totally dry "really wet" collage. Sue and I looked at it yesterday and each time I turned it and changed the orientation we both saw different creatures...but it was going to need more done to it no matter what. Today when I turned it I immediately saw two horses...that is what this one is about. With all of the build up of the matte medium the collage nearly looks like an encaustic (for a brief second). The color of the green marbled paper is called "Forest" so I think I will be calling these guys Forest Horses, or something along that theme.

The "really wet" collage is now very dry.

I needed to tear some paper for ears for both of them and a few pieces for faces but I really love this collage (so far).

The other thing I need to address today is the eye situation for the really long horns guy and for the (former) rocking (horse) creature. Luckily I think I can dig out the old eyes and replace them with different ones and repair the missing chunks by the time I go to bed. I cannot afford to let them go much beyond tonight because I am starting to get into crunch time for the plaster cloth to dry and get papered and do the final surface and seal it with a protective coat of varnish if I want to have them in the show and I DO want/need them in the show, for sure!

Here is the (former) rocking (horse) creature with the new eyes already in place. I am very happy with the way the eyes are "aimed" -- I will never ever get them perfect...I am not a machine, I am not a trained/schooled sculptor...I just make stuff up as I go along.

The new eyes for the (former) rocking (horse) creature. They look even better in person. I don't think the camera can see exactly what a person can.

And here is the really long horns guy. His eyes were a lot tougher to dig/chisel out. I wasn't able to save them...the edges cracked and chipped...oh well. I need to re-figure his forehead, too.
It was very do-able...except I ended up sleeping for part of the afternoon. I think it was partly due to overdoing it last night, the lawn guys picking up the leaves and stirring up all of those allergens, and my new medication. I didn't even realize I had been sleeping.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">So a few hours ago I was going to start on the framing but I felt the pull to paper the collages first. I put the tacks+mono filament line on the backs of the 3 blanks (I like to hang them up to dry). I put a sheet of neutral paper on this smaller canvas with no problems.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Then I took that canvas into the studio and when I looked at the guy that has the orange lines that have been giving me trouble I felt/heard a very strong "this is not for now...maybe later" and when I get something that strong I follow it. I realize how hokey this sounds, but this is a very real thing that happens when I am working on stuff.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The "very wet" canvas starting out.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">So I took that guy out and slathered on some matte medium and tore up a sheet of paper and started to lay first piece on when I got an incredibly strong "wet" suggestion. That guy is made from a lot of torn circle-y pieces of black Unryu paper and I figured the "wet" meant that he would need a lot of matte medium to be able to glue down the papers. I kept everything very wet as I worked. The feeling/suggestion/direction kept getting more insistent with the "wet -- very wet" thing. I kept covering the collage and felt like I was sent back into the studio for different paper -- I went through the pile of papers kept getting drawn to the marbled ones. I have never used those in collages, only for covering parts of plaster cloth guys. I tried to choose something else but the "very wet" was persistent and so was the "need" to choose the very blue/copper marbled paper and a sort of matching blue Unryu paper. Okay -- I'm not going to argue.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I tore the paper and laid it into a very wet swipe of matte medium then I tore a piece or two of the Unryu paper and covered over the marbled paper...it is all a very wet canvas at this point...and still the "very wet" kept up. I was pushed to get more marbled paper (this time the green one called "forest") and a cover up piece of pale green...but I was also very drawn to the really ridiculous green Unryu paper that I have never used yet. I did fight this -- at first. I had to give in and use one piece of it. Still the "very wet" thing is nearly overwhelming. I have no clue what it is about or what orientation it goes in, but here is the result of the layers of papering. I am so curious to see what it looks like when it dries.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Today is mostly being filled with the dreaded base coat painting of the plaster cloth cat girl. Man, I really dislike painting of ANY kind and yet I am driven to make things that will eventually need some sort of painting done to them. Ah well.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I have some tester pots of a three or four shades of green that I got when I was trying to choose the paint color for my house. I want to use one of the lighter shades as the under coat and then use a darker one on top that is a bit more than dry brushed over it and that will be the cat girl storyteller's background color combo for her skirt. So I got the first coat on -- it took forEVER. While it was drying I made a quick run out to the grocery store.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Second coat of Humorous Green and then I moved the tables around a bit and rolled on the same color to two of the blank canvases. <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Next it was time to put a layer of tissue paper on the big head (former horse) creature.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I love this big head guy so much. I know I will have him in the show but I don't know yet if I will want to have him be for sale.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">After that I was still pretty charged up even though I really needed to stop for a break to feed the cats and then make my dinner. So (instead) I papered another one of the blank canvases. My intention is/was to use a neutral paper as the background and project images onto it to paint (<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">se<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">e what I was saying earlier?) or collage. I have three more blank canvases I can still do the projecting with...I really want to do that.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Every time I look at this photo I see more guys trying to come forward...I saw a different one when the canvas was still laying flat on the table.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Okay...now I will take that break and feed the cats and then make my dinner...10:15 -- that's not too bad. After dinner the cats are going back into the bedroom so I can put that darker base color onto the cat girl's skirt. I will most likely paper the last three canvases as well. I don't have it in me to do anymore papering of plaster cloth guys tonight.

Today I have been going through sketchbooks and notes, etc. to look at creatures I've been jotting down. I am trying to come up with compositions for the blank canvases. I will use the overhead projector to help me size and transfer the images to the canvases. Peggy came by this afternoon to bring the projector down from the loft in Studio B and I tried it out just to make sure it was still in working condition and to make sure that write-on film wasn't a waste of money...it wasn't...yay. The image is sort of hard to see because the room was so bright, but it is the robot on the wall between the windows. I won't be using that for a collage -- it was just easy to trace yesterday.

I papered the top half of the long horns guy all the way around -- hard to believe two hours flew past and that was only as far as I got...it is all the curves and non-flat surfaces I guess. I intend to go back and finish him tonight. I hope to get one or two of the smaller new guys papered tonight, too.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The plaster cloth drips on the cat girl's skirt were thin enough to wipe off (mostly) with a damp paper towel. It needs to dry overnight and then I will need to vacuum the paper towel crumbs off. I think that will be good enough to cover with one of the exterior paint testers I got when I was choosing the green for my house...I have several of them. I will be painting and/or papering over it anyway. The plaster cloth on the upper part of the cat girl was a lot heavier<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> -- that is why I had to <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">put tissue paper over that part.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I also stopped by Northville Lumber to see if they could cut some wood and dowels for me. I think that using the dowels with the wood bases will stabilize Baby Beast and He Dreams He is a Tree for display at the show. He Dreams is NFS but Baby Beast will be. I will screw the dowels to the boards with long skinny screws that I got today (I might end up needing help with this part in order to drill straight pilot holes so that the dowels don't crack or split), but first I will paper the<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> bases (or paint them) to finish them off.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I also final coated 5 collages in my spray booth (really, the studio bathroom...the only room with a really good exhaust fan) and they are drying in Studio B. I have the ready made frames for them and the hanging hardware is ready to go...I want them to dry for a couple of days first.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">And then there was this collage that I need to paint thin lines on. Tonight I tried putting on a third coat of orange paint but it is just beyond me...the lines are getting sloppier and wider but not more orange. I tried cutting decorative paper into very thin strips and put them on with matte medium but it is just not working...the paper is dissolving before I can pick it up and lay it on the canvas...I tried to patch it but it just isn't working. I am disappointed but not defeated. I will figure this out.

Whenever I would daydream of having my own solo show I usually pictured it at The Village Theater on Cherry Hill in Canton. I really love that venue. And a few weeks ago my dream actually came true -- I was offered my first ever solo show -- AND -- it will be at the Village Theater!

This opportunity arrived totally out of the blue and I did not have a whole lot of completed work on hand but I didn't want to turn down this incredible offer. I am scrambling to get enough work finished for my deadline of November 30. I have a few pieces that are complete and ready to show. I have several others that are also show-ready but that are coming from my collection and will not be for sale. I have a few other pieces that will be on loan from the new owners of those works. I know I can pull this together in time and I will.

I have made lists of tasks and I am trying to accomplish as many as possible in the order I listed them. I have a LOT to do including photographing the work, coming up with the postcard design, and writing an artist statement. I also need to give everything a title and price, and deliver an inventory sheet on the drop off date. I've gotten through a couple of lists so far but in order to keep me on a tight schedule I decided to start the blog again so that I have something I feel I need to account to each night. I won't be showing completed pieces in their entirety but I may consider showing detail shots later on (just so I can look back at the blog to see where I was).

Okay -- today I have been working on prepping the plaster cloth cat girl. I reworked her face a short while ago and gave her taxidermy eyes. I have thought of a new back story for her and I want to make her into a storyteller. Her new outfit will reflect this.

Throughout today (and tonight) I have been applying tissue paper in preparation for her new surface decoration. While I reworked her I got a lot of plaster cloth drips and splashes on her and I tried washing it off but it makes her just too wet. Instead I have gone back to the tissue paper method that has worked for me in the past. A layer or two of tissue paper smooths out the imperfections a bit and makes a decent surface to either paint or add decorative papers to. I had originally hoped to be done with this by tonight but I found it took much longer than I had expected. Physically I just cannot do anymore tonight. Below are photos from today.
Well, I feel that this -- combined with laundry, cat box washing, and a load of dishes -- is plenty of work for today. I am really out of practice with posting and it feels strange to be writing again -- I am feeling pretty self conscious -- but maybe blogging will do double duty and help me with writing the copy for the postcard and artist statement. I know much of today's post is awkwardly worded but I imagine I will fall back into the rhythm of it in a few days. I hope I keep my resolve to stick with the nightly blog post check-ins. Tookhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14732091348538018900noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2828851263207999499.post-24151679351179444652015-06-05T19:27:00.000-04:002015-06-05T19:31:22.269-04:002015 | Day 156 (part two)Day One Hundred Fifty-Six (part two)
If you know me, you know how much I hate to paint and the lengths I go to in order to avoid it. Then when I finally actually paint, I hold my breath and I am so shaky by the time I am done I need a Xanax...sheesh. Well, that's where I am right now.

I finally fixed BiteYou's edges and half-decided on the look for his eyes. In order to commit to his eyes paint I used colored pencils on a couple of print outs I made for myself to practice on. I wish the act of painting was as simple as the colored pencil attempts. Anyway -- for now, here is what I ended up with. I will need to put another layer of Payne's Gray on the inside of his eyes. I know for sure that I don't want to add the white highlights at end. Yeah, it probably would look better, but it is just not me. I am just thrilled I got this far.
I suppose I could change my mind and re-paint his eyes with my first thought -- the deeper brown inside of the original brown edge...no white circle...but, whoa -- I SO need a break right about now!Tookhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14732091348538018900noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2828851263207999499.post-91112619544466041342015-06-05T11:37:00.001-04:002015-06-05T11:37:28.001-04:002015 | Day 156Day One Hundred Fifty-Six

Well, I suppose I might as well get used to the (apparent) fact that I am no longer doing a daily blog -- this year anyway. I miss the discipline of the daily posts but things are different this year and that is just how it is.

This morning I am beginning to rework the cat girl. I want to try to get her to look more "finished" than she used to. I also want her to be a stand-alone character rather than be connected to Chime Cat. Originally I tried to make her look like a resident of Cloud City (the place Chime Cat was visiting). Her skirt and tail were meant to look like clouds and a sky. For this incarnation she will have her own story. She also gets glass taxidermy eyes this time around.

Today I am working on "aiming" the glass eyes. I will need to do more plaster cloth reconstruction on her face but this is my first stopping/drying point. She won't be even close to perfect but I am enjoying the learning progress/process that goes along with working with what I've got.
DONE!!! I filled in all of the circles on the linen snake!!!

Over the last three days I have been working on and off on the linen snake's embroidery floss circles and I cannot believe I am finally done with them!

I am definitely taking a break from sewing for a few days...then I will figure out what my next step will be for the linen snake's construction.

I don't know what is in the air today but I am so exhausted and physically and emotionally drained that I cannot even put it into words. I am okay, just super super out of whack. I am taking the night off. If you need me I will be conked out in front of the tv with elevation and a cold pack...and a giant box of tissues. One thing I know for sure -- it is NOT the pit -- I know what that feels like and this is maybe a tenth of the intensity of that...but still just rendering me totally incapable of anything...so I guess that is something anyway that is something decent to say about all of this.Tookhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14732091348538018900noreply@blogger.com0
