Day 117 - 365/2014

Day One Hundred Seventeen

Today I filled in for my friend Joanne at the Northville Art House.  Joanne was the organizer of this month's solo show by artist Tom Thewes.  The show came down today.  I was there to open the NAH for Tom and his helpers...then my job was to patch the holes and paint the patches.  Jasper graciously removed the various hardware and Joshua got on a chair and filled seven holes that were too tall for me to reach.  Jasper and Joshua helped Tom with the wrapping and packing of the artwork.  It was all pretty organized and went smoothly, but it still took a little over three hours.  I stayed on for another hour after that finishing up the patching and painting.

The work table was already set up and waiting with everything we needed.
In all, forty-two pieces of art need to be taken down and packed up.
I'm sorry to see this show go.
Tom getting started on packing the first piece.
Whoa -- that was a LOT of work Tom and the guys did -- good thing he has experienced helpers!
And the first of many trips down to the car.

Oh -- and I forgot to show the fortune I got yesterday at lunch with Juana...

Hmm...mysterious!

Day 98 - 365/2014

Day Ninety-Eight

Detritus: The Work of Tom Thewes opened at the Northville Art House on Friday, April 4.  I didn't get a very good chance to actually look at the show that night.  I went back on Saturday and was able to take a few more photos to share...and belive me, there is much, much more to see.  (click the links below the last photo for more information.)

I encourage you to come and see this powerful show for yourself -- and do plan to spend a little bit of time -- there is a lot to take in.

Day 94 - 365/2014

Day Ninety-Four

Strange day...very cold and rainy and blowy...the kind of weather that is no way near the cold we've had this winter and yet it feels much colder...I think it is the dampness and the wind.

Anyway -- I changed my mind (again) about the really long horns guy.  He is getting base coated with white paint today...I hope to get one more coat on before I go to bed for the night.

And tonight was the First Friday of the month...time for another opening reception at the Northville Art House.  This month we have a solo show featuring the work of Tom Thewes called "Detritus".  You can read more about the show at the NAH's website at this link.  I was able to get a few shots of the show -- and the fabulous food provided by Edwards Cafe & Caterer and Bandoni Creative -- before guests started to arrive and I took up my post at the door.  And then before I left I was able to get a few very candid shots of Tom Thewes with Matt Eaton and Joanne Bandoni.  The show is outstanding...I will go back when it is less crowded and try to take some slightly more serious photos.

2012/365 - Day 153

Opening Reception for West of Center!

Wow -- what a night!

I have wanted to be in a juried show at Northville Art House even before I moved to Northville.  When I first saw West of Center (four years ago) I really REALLY wanted to be in that show.  Last year I didn't make it...but this year I did.  AND my piece Baby Beast received 3rd place!

Tom Thewes was the juror and he was just awesome in person.  I am so glad I got to meet him and talk to him for a minute or two -- what a delightful guy.  There is just too much to say about artist Tom Thewes and his work, but here is the most current info:

Here are photos (with my very biased and slanted take on the show).  I deliberately didn't shoot everything so that when people go and see the show in person there will still be wonderful surprises.  (AND my point-and-shoot camera doesn't do very well with all of the glare from the glass in the framed 2-D work.)  You can see the full album at my Facebook page, but here are a few of my favorite shots (my blog...so mostly pics of me here...lol):

June 1 - 24, 2012
West of Center All Media Show

The Northville Art House is proud to present its fourth annual “West of Center,” contemporary art, all media show, juried by Detroit Artist/CEO of ©CPOP Gallery and Executive Director of Contra Projects, Tom Thewes.

“West of Center” is a nod to the Art House’s location, as well as its mission to bring the community something unexpected, edgy and compelling. It's an eclectic, contemporary art exhibit that showcases a wide range of accomplished pieces, including sculpture, acrylics, digital collage/archival prints, assemblages, mixed-media, pastels, oil on canvas, ink stamp, photography, graphite on paper and more.

Forty-four artists from Michigan and out-of-state submitted work for this highly- anticipated, must-see exhibit.  The show runs from June 1 - June 24.
