Today was an adventure in my Creative Progress Report.
One of my goals for this year is to become more brave and submit work to local shows and Whitdel Arts in Detroit is holding an Open Exhibition Call.
Today was the first of three days when artists can bring in up to five pieces each and hang their art in the gallery. I went to the Whitdel with my friend Jon and two of his friends who I met for the first time today, Donita and Steve.
Jon, Donita and Steve were all at Wayne State together. Jon and Donita hung some of their work today, Steve is sitting this one out.
The gallery space is really great...lots of room and wall space and hallways and a lower level gallery area.
I pretty much liked (and wanted) one particular spot from the very beginning, but I walked around the space and tried to picture what it would be like with more art around my collages. I knew I wanted mine to be hung close together so that it would leave room for more artists because there are 2 more days to go. I haven't done this sort of thing before (choosing a spot and hanging my own art) and I got a lot of valuable counseling from Jon, Donita and Steve and also the people who work at the gallery, but I decided in the end to go with my first gut feeling. I am very happy with the placement.
We will be going to the opening reception and no doubt I will report on it here in the blog.
There are my two pieces -- waaaay down there -- this is the view from the door as you walk in.
As we were leaving another artist was putting her pieces up and she happened to take a pedestal over to "my" wall and put her two pieces up near mine...they look really great together. I can't wait to see what else ends up around my two collages.
