closing reception for collage show
Today we piled in the car and made a road trip to the closing reception/awards (and art pick up) of the Collage, Assemblage & Construction Exhibition at LowellArts! in Lowell, MI. The juror for the show was Patti Sevensma.
Alphabetically, today's group was: Carla, Joan, Peggy, Ruth and me -- we had such a great time!
Here are some photos from the event:
There was a really great turn out for the closing reception.

Giving out the awards
I received an honorable mention for my collage "Time for a Nap".
There is my collage and below it is a fantastic piece by Annette Smith.
Ann (as her name tag read) also received an honorable mention for her piece.
It turns out that Joan and Carla already knew of Ann and that Ann has shown at the Northville Art House in the past. AND Ann is from (nearby) Plymouth -- and is maybe interested in joining us for art stuff...like maybe 2nd Thursday. (We had to assure Ann that we are indeed trouble.)
Carla, enjoying the show
Peggy with her two collages
Joan with her assemblage
Baby Beast was also in the show -- I am very happy to be bringing him back home!
After the awards juror Patti Sevensma did a walk and talk around the gallery and some of the artists also spoke about their work.
Artist Ruth Egnater talks about her collage(s).
If I had been able to purchase a piece from the show, it would have been this collage by Ruth.
This was towards the end of the walk and talk.
It was a really good show and I got to talk with several artists and also Patti Sevensma.
After we retrieved our art and packed ourselves back into Peggy's car and went into town to have a late lunch/early dinner at Flat River Grill. The food was delicious and our server Brent was wonderful (and patient). Then it was back into the car for the two hour ride home.
Good art, good friends, good time!

2012/365 - Day 279
spontaneous road trip
Today my fabulous sister Sue and I made a totally unplanned and spontaneous mid-afternoon road trip (2 hours one way) to Lowell, MI to see the "Collage, Assemblage and Construction" exhibition at LowellArts!
Sue and I played phone tag all day yesterday and ended the last message "conversation" with Sue telling me she'd give me a call in the morning. Well, this morning when we finally got a chance to chat it turned out we both had the afternoon free. We had to postpone celebrating Sue's recent birthday (for several reasons) and we thought we'd like to make a short road trip to give us some sister time on a day that would be convenient for both of us...unexpectedly today was the day!
I will write more specifically about the show and LowellArts! in the blog post on October 21 when a group of us go back to Lowell for the Closing Reception/Awards. The gallery itself is really wonderful, but it is a difficult setting for my point-and-shoot camera due to the glare and reflection from the glass in frames (and/or high gloss finish) on most of the pieces in the show. So -- for now -- here is a very quick glimpse of a small sampling of the show:
Charles LaRue
Flower Boxes (detail)
My plaster cloth sculpture "Baby Beast"
Joan's assemblage piece "Shoes"
Susan Mulder
Persistence of Repetition
2nd place winner
Peggy's two collages (lower left)
Alison Lang
Santos II
Donna F. St. John
If Only I Were Perfect
This is made of Barbie doll arms and legs with imagery in the background and statements on the torso. Joan is going to love this one in person!
My collage -- one of the repurposed canvases where the images emerged on their own.

2012/365 - Day 265
what a thrill -- guess what!
Remember the regional art show several of us from this area submitted work(s) to and that Peggy, Joan and I were accepted for? It is at LowellArts! in Lowell, MI and it is called "Collage, Assemblage & Construction". It was juried by Patti Sevensma.
Well, guess what...I received an Honorable Mention for my collage called "Time For A Nap"! I was flabbergasted when the email came today. Wow!
Here is a scan of the poster for the show:

Because Lowell is a two and a half hour car trip (one way) I don't think I will be getting a chance to see the show before the group of us goes out there for the Closing Reception, but I can't wait to see the show! (But then again, maybe my sister will want to see the show before then...she loves car trips.)
These are my two pieces that were accepted for the show -- Baby Beast (plaster cloth sculpture) and Time For A Nap (collage).

2012/365 - Day 251
FULL day
This morning Peggy and I took our -- and Joan's -- accepted pieces to Lowell Arts Council's King Gallery in Lowell, MI (near Grand Rapids). Peggy drove and the time flew by -- I barely noticed the two hours (one way) in the car!
Here are my collage, Peggy's two collages, and Joan's collage after we unpacked them.
Baby Beast is waiting in the corner, out of harm's way.
Here Kacey Cornwell and Peggy talk about the show.
This is a state-wide exhibition featuring 52 artworks from 39 Michigan artists called "Collage, Assemblage & Construction".
Textiles, found objects, ceramics, photography, mixed-media and more will be shown.
The show will run September 11 - October 21 with the closing reception and awards presentation on Sunday, October 21.
A group of us will be going to the closing reception and having a look around Lowell.

Later after I'd been home for a while I was looking around on Facebook and Peggy had posted that she had one of her two pieces accepted into the Canton Fine Arts Exhibition -- that she had just received her postcard notification. I dropped everything and checked my mail, too.
And YAY -- one of my submissions was accepted!
My big repurposed canvas collage "Rebel Rebel" was accepted -- I am SO excited -- I absolutely love this piece.
(I called it Rebel Rebel after the David Bowie song because the dog "loves dancing and he looks divine".)
THEN it was time to go to the opening of "Above and Below" -- a thematic fiber arts challenge inspired by Kat Campau. It is running at Two Twelve Arts Center in Saline, MI from September 4 - October 25.
I was going to go with Leann and Ruth but Ruth couldn't make it and then it turned out that Leann's husband Mark was going to come with us (yay) and we piled in my car and Mark did the driving -- what a treat for me -- plus I was able to finally get to talk with Mark for more than a quick "hello".

MAN -- talk about eye candy and intense work! I am in such awe of fiber artists! This is another one of those "you really need to see this in person" shows. Really.
This is a close up of Deb's piece in the show.
I am sorry I didn't write down titles or artists, it was pretty packed in there. Maybe I can find out and come back and edit these photos...but I wanted to share some of the pics I took.
These two photos are parts of the "above and below"
of the same art quilt.

Leann giving her artist's talk by her quilt...talking about why she uses skeletons so often.
After we saw the show Mark, Leann and I went to dinner in Saline...mmmm, mmmm...fun conversation and really good food.
